Management
Hovione is an independent family owned international group of companies.
The Company was founded in 1959 by Ivan and Diane Villax, and remains an independent family business. The Board is formed of Villax family members and independent Non-Executive Directors and is led by an independent Non-Executive Chairman.
The Chief Executive Officer is responsible for the management of the business and is assisted by the Global Leadership Team.
The Global Leadership Team manages Hovione’s activities and each member is responsible for a specific area of the business.

Stefan Doboczky
Chairman of the BoardStefan Doboczky holds a Ph.D. in Natural Sciences and a Dipl.-Ing. in Technical Chemistry from the Technical University of Vienna, as well as an Executive M.B.A. from IMD Lausanne.
Stefan has over 30 years of experience in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, with leadership roles in companies such as DSM and Lenzing AG. He is currently the CEO of Borealis AG.
Stefan is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hovione.
Diane Villax
Non-Executive Board MemberDiane Villax founded Hovione with her husband Ivan in 1959, and was the executive responsible for Finance for the first 30 years of the company. Diane has a keen interest and a personal involvement in the building and communicating of the company’s values and culture.
Diane is a Non-Executive Board Member of Hovione.
Guy Villax
Non-Executive Board MemberDegree in Accounting and Financial Management
Guy Villax has a degree in Management from the University College at Buckingham, UK.
Guy Villax was Hovione's Chief Executive from 1997 to 2022, having previously worked at Price Waterhouse in London and Hovione in Asia.
Guy holds leadership positions at industry associations and in Portuguese state organizations: Rx-360, Health Cluster Portugal, Portugal’s Business Roundtable; and the ANI (Portugal’s National Innovation Agency) and the CNCTI (National Council for Science, Technology and Innovation).
Sofia Villax
Non-Executive Board MemberDegree in Pharmacology
Sofia Villax has a B.Sc. in Pharmacology from Bristol University.
Sofia worked at Hovione in various positions: in Macau in Quality Assurance, and then in Portugal in Product Development, Marketing, Communications and Innovation. She is a member of the General Council of the Universidade de Aveiro.

Miguel Villax
Non-Executive Board MemberMiguel Villax has a B.Sc in Software Engineering from the University College of London (UCL).
Miguel worked as Digital senior director at Hovione between 2019 and 2022, encompassing both IT and OT. Miguel has over 35 years of experience architecting Information systems for regulated industries, including API manufacturing and banking, as well as for travel and leisure.
Miguel is a Non-Executive Board Member of Hovione.
Michel Pettigrew

Michel Pettigrew has a B.COM from McGill University, Montreal, and M.B.A. from York University, Toronto.
Past President of the Ferring Group of Companies, Michel Pettigrew has more than 43 years of pharmaceutical industry experience. Before Ferring, Michel Pettigrew held several executive-level positions at Bristol-Myers Squibb. During this time, he spent eight years in Asia in different positions including GM of Indonesia and GM of Malaysia and Singapore.

David LaPré

David LaPré has a BSc in Engineering and Life Sciences from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. M.B.A. from New York University.
Over 20 years, David LaPré held senior executive roles at Roche/ Genentech, in the United States and Switzerland.
David is a Non-Executive Board Member of Hovione.
Charles L. Cooney

Prof. Charles L. Cooney has a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and an S.M. and Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering from MIT.
Charles Cooney started as a Professor at MIT in 1982 and was the Founding Faculty Director of the Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation. His research and teaching interests span a range of topics in Biochemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, and Technological Innovation.
Charles Cooney sits on the Boards of multiple Biotech and Pharma companies and is Non-Executive Board Member of Hovione.

Global Leadership Team
António Almeida
Co-CEO, CFOAntónio Almeida has more than 30 years of international experience in finance and 20 years in the pharmaceutical CDMO industry. He started his career at Siemens in 1994, where he held several positions of increasing responsibility across Portugal and Germany until 2007. António joined Hovione in 2007 as Group Controller and played a key role in supporting the company’s international growth and operational expansion.
In 2014, he was appointed Chief Financial Officer, leading Hovione’s global financial strategy and overseeing the company’s finance organization across multiple geographies.
António Almeida holds a degree in Business Management from Lusíada University.
Marco Gil
Co-CEO, Senior VP - Sales & MarketingDr. Marco Gil has over 20 years of experience in the pharmaceutical CDMO industry. Since joining Hovione in 2007, he has held several senior management positions, including Director of R&D Process Chemistry and Site General Manager of Hovione’s New Jersey facility in the United States, where he led operations and strategic growth initiatives in one of the company’s key markets. Between 2017 and 2022, Dr. Marco Gil held leadership roles in Sales and Business Development, contributing to the expansion of Hovione’s integrated offering and global customer partnerships.
Since May 2022, he has served as Senior Vice-President of Sales & Marketing, leading Hovione’s global commercial strategy and market positioning, combining deep scientific expertise with extensive operational and business knowledge in the CDMO sector.
Dr. Marco Gil holds a degree in Chemical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the Technical University of Lisbon.
Liam Keary
Senior VP - Quality & RegulatoryLiam holds a Bachelors' degree in Electronic Production and has extensive Leadership experience in the Medical Device, Biologics and Drug manufacturing. He is also certified in TS 16949, FDA (QSR/QSIT) and is a Certified ISO 13485 EU MDR Internal Auditor.
Liam brings more than 25 years of experience in Quality Management in companies such as Celestica, Johnson & Johnson and Mallinckrodt where his last role was as VP and Global Head of Quality.
Liam Keary joined Hovione in 2023.
David Basile
VP Technical Operations – AmericasDegree in Mechanical Engineering, Master of Science Degree in Systems Engineering
David has 25 years of experience as a global pharma manufacturing executive with special focus on operational excellence and engineering. During this time, he held several positions including Global Director of Engineering, Automation & Reliability at Catalent Pharma Solutions where he oversaw strategic capital expansions for several business units in the Americas. Prior to this David spent fifteen years with Teva / Actavis in a variety of technical leadership roles over the northeast US region.
David Basile joined as VP Technical Operations - Americas in 2021.
Jorge Pastilha
VP Technical Operations - Europe and AsiaJorge holds a degree in Chemical Engineering and an MBA.
He joined Hovione in 1994 as a Production Engineer at the Portugal site, where he contributed to multiple cross-functional projects and took on a variety of management roles. In 2007, Jorge was appointed Site General Manager of Hovione’s Macao (China) site. Three years later, in 2010, he became General Manager of Technical Operations in Asia, overseeing operations in both Macao and China.
In 2014, Jorge transitioned to the role of Engineering General Manager, and in 2019, he returned to Portugal as General Manager of our Sete Casas site.
In November 2024, Jorge was appointed as the Vice President of Technical Operations for Europe and Asia.
Ilda Ventura
Senior VP - Human ResourcesDegree in Human Resources Management and Occupational Psychology
Ilda has a degree in Human Resources Management and Occupational Psychology.
Ilda has 25 years of experience in HR management, having worked in Portugal, Spain and Germany. Her experience spans HR Business Development, Performance and Talent Management, Compensation and Benefits and has been developed in the IT and Services industries, in a global multicultural environment.
Ilda Ventura joined Hovione as VP of Human Resources in 2020. In 2024, Ilda was appointed Senior VP of Human Resources at Hovione.
Tiago Ferreira de Matos
General CounselDegree in Law. LLM in International Law and Business Administration
Tiago has a degree in Law from Lisbon University and a LLM in International Law and a Certificate in Business Administration from Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, in Chicago, and IE Law School, in Madrid.
Tiago has more than 20 years of international experience, most of which as Head of Legal for several jurisdictions of Europe, North America, Asia, Middle East and Africa. He has also acted as Director of several companies in different countries, with management responsibilities. Before becoming an in-house lawyer in 2007, Tiago was a Senior Associate at a Spanish Law firm.
Tiago Ferreira de Matos joined Hovione as General Counsel in 2017.
